Finding a Loved One Heroin Addiction Treatment

If you are worried that your loved one may be addicted to heroin, it is important to get him or her help as soon as possible. Addiction is a terrible illness that causes a great deal of heartache for the addict and loved ones alike, and heroin is an especially dangerous substance.

Because the person often cannot stop taking heroin voluntarily, he or she will need help.

Heroin Addiction Rehab Centers

Your concern will go a long way toward aiding your loved one if you are able to find a good rehab center for him or her. The NIDA states that one of the most important things to remember about treatment is that it "does not need to be voluntary to be effective." Deciding that your loved one needs to check into a rehab center is often difficult, but if you are able to do so, it could be exactly what he or she needs. Remember to consider the types of rehab centers and whether your loved one would benefit from a controlled environment with 24-hour care (inpatient centers) or a more hands-off facility where he or she can follow a set of rules and still have access to medication and behavioral therapy (outpatient care).

Heroin Addiction Support Groups

Many individuals seek support groups for a supplement to their medication and behavioral therapy. Support groups and mutual-help groups exist throughout the country and can be found online as well as through community outreach centers and rehab facilities. Narcotics Anonymous is a well-known MHG that has branches everywhere. Your loved one may feel supported through the possibility of meeting others who are struggling with heroin addiction and knowing that you are there for him or her.

Methadone Maintenance Clinics

Methadone maintenance clinics exist in many places and can provide your loved one with the ability to continue living his or her life while fighting heroin addiction. The CDC describes the treatment as "a program in which addicted individuals receive daily doses of methadone" in order to counteract the cravings for heroin. The methadone, when administered correctly, only needs to be taken once a day and will not produce the high that heroin does. Methadone maintenance treatment is for those who are struggling with addiction and truly want to stop abusing heroin.

One of the best ways you can help your loved one during this trying time, though, is to be there for him or her through every step of addiction treatment. Your help and support will let your loved one know that you are on his or her side, and it will encourage him or her not to give up. Because of your help, your loved one can begin to recover from heroin addiction.
